World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, seeks a Chief of Party, Salonga Conservation and Sustainable Management Partnership Project Congo Basin (Salonga Project). This is a five year position, we expect the incumbent to start in October 2021.


Major Function

This Chief of Party (COP) provides overall vision and leadership for the USAID-funded Salonga Project, and supports other WWF-US-funded programs as requested by the Congo Basin Managing Director. The COP directs the project’s core staff and partners responsible for planning, coordination, design, delivery, and reporting of all project activities and site visits, in compliance with local and international law, and USAID regulations. This key personnel role is responsible for representing the project to USAID, partners, and members of the government, ensuring the project is well coordinated across all relevant government counterparts and other USAID/donor-funded projects.


  • Applies participatory, adaptive management approach to ensure program is efficient, effective, and achieves planned results.
  • With support from WWF-DRC and WWF US HQ, ensures that the project is implemented in compliance with donor policies and regulations, including subgrants and subcontracts.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with project participants, project stakeholders, beneficiaries and other relevant organizations in the region including government partners and USAID personnel.
  • Seeks out, assesses, and recommends new strategic partnerships that add value and impact to programmatic activities through innovation and complementary expertise.
  • Advises the US-based Congo Basin Managing Director on pertinent issues in the region, progress on program activities, and technical areas.
  • Actively pursues new funding sources, and reviews and oversees relevant fundraising activities, including meeting with potential donors and discussing and reviewing fundraising proposals.
  • Working with WWF and partners to ensure gender integration and adherence to environmental and social safeguards standards. 
  • Coordinates with other departments within WWF-US and with other bodies of the WWF network.
  • Interacts frequently with management and staff to advise, plan, and develop cohesive regional program activities.  Interacts regularly with program staff to coordinate regional program work with other activities in the organization.
  • Interacts frequently with USAID and representatives of WWF International, conservation organizations (especially Salonga Project partner organizations), government agencies, universities, etc.  Enhances professional capacity through participation in environmental organizations, publication of work, and regular contact with colleagues. Maintains professional reputation through regular contact with managers from other professional organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, and other colleagues.
  • Provides technical and scientific expertise to projects and programs, within the WWF network as well as outside the organization related to the Salonga Project by maintaining knowledge base in relevant technical areas. 
  • Participates in regional and international strategic planning and technical workshops, and conferences, as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by US-based Congo Basin Managing Director.
  • May supervise Salonga Project program staff, interns, fellows, and consultants


Skills and Abilities

  • Masters Degree required; in a relevant field preferred (biological sciences, natural resources, management, or international development).
  • Minimum ten years’ experience in biological conservation, natural resources, management, international development, or related field.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and managing complex conservation projects and proven ability and experience in networking with key regional players.
  • Experience managing multi-million-dollar USAID projects strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with USG-funded conservation projects is essential.
  • Extensive field experience in Africa with a strong central Africa background necessary.
  • Proven ability to sensitively and effectively supervise staff, and to manage complex conservation projects.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) abilities and strong organizational skills. 
  • Administrative and project management experience is essential along with diplomatic skills and a desire to work with nationals from developing countries. 
  • Ability to analyze, prioritize, complete work with minimal supervision, and meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to facilitate the work of others, take initiative, use independent judgment, and work effectively as the member of a team. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, both in English and French, are required.
  • Fluency in English and French

Location: Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with frequent travel to Salonga National Park, and remote field locations in the landscape
