Overview

Congo Basin Forest Hub Coordinator
Location: flexible: Yaoundé or Libreville
 
Contract type: fixed term (2 years) renewable
Mission: Initiate, enable and support the implementation of the global forest and forest related programs in the Congo Basin and the delivery of the Global Forest Practice Outcomes for the Congo Basin.

Responsibilities

Main function and responsibilities:

The Congo Basin Forest Hub Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the WWF Forest program in the 5 countries in the Congo Basin where WWF works: Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic. This includes the global Forest Forward and the Forest Foresight programs as well as Landscape Finance initiatives. The position provides strategic guidance and support to the national forest managers and acts as representative of the Congo Basin in the global WWF forest program. This entails among others:

A.   Coordination, policy level responsibilities, advocacy and partnership/coalition building

  • Establish, operate and manage the Congo Basin Forest Hub, composed of the national forest program managers and supported by the WWF Network.
  • Capacity building of the Congo Basin Forests Team across the Congo Basin Countries and promote and enable program alignment, facilitate knowledge exchange and collectively leverage opportunities.
  • Act as an ambassador for WWFs forests work in the Congo Basin internally and externally, and act as the internal representative for the region in key fora such as Forest Practice Leadership Team, the Carbon Finance and Markets Task Force and the Forests Forward Steering Group.
  • Provide strategic oversight, thought leadership, technical guidance and support to  forest programs across the Congo Basin, with emphasis on emerging opportunities for the region including climate finance, nature based solutions and private sector engagement.
  • In consultation with country teams, develop and strengthen strategic partnerships with regional institutions, NGOs, development partners, the private sector, donors and relevant implementation agencies.
  • Identify regional policy opportunities and processes and support effective coordination of WWF regional and local staff to engage.

B. Program support

  • Manage the Forest Forward community of practice, composed of logging industry members of the program; support the implementation and expansion of the program.
  • Support capacity development across the region with local, national and regional stakeholders on forest issues by identifying capacity gaps and facilitating access to resources, training programs and technical guidance.
  • Represent WWF Central Africa region in IRF, GRAA and other ranger related meetings at national, regional and international level.

 C. Program development & monitoring

  • Lead the renewal of the Congo Basin Forest strategy and approach for a new generation of industrial and community forest concessions that deliver for people, nature and climate
  • Invite and import innovation relevant to Congo Basin Forest programme from inside and outside the WWF Network;
  • Support the development of project programme proposals and resource mobilization based on country and regional strategies. With a particular focus initially on leading support for an upcoming call by the UK government for proposals under the Forest Governance, Markets and Climate (FGMC) II programme, and by the Belgian government for proposals under the Development Cooperation.
  • Coordinate monitoring the impact and progress of the Forest Program.
  • Enhance visibility of Forest Program Hub activities and priorities through internal and external communication.

Qualifications

What you need:

Required qualifications

  • At least a Master’s degree in forestry, natural sciences, environment, or related field;
  • At least 10 years professional experience in forestry, conservation, policy, environment, sustainable development, forest or deforestation-related agricultural commodity supply chains;
  • Demonstrated experience leading and growing successful, impactful programs, with experience in managing and engaging with multi-disciplinary teams, and working within complex organisations;
  • Fluency in English and French;
  • Knowledge of climate and conservation finance an advantage.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically;
  • Proven leadership skills; strong team leader and member, with ability to also work independently and with virtual teams;
  • Able to inspire and motivate others with strong communication and influencing skills;
  • Strong coordination and facilitation skills, and adept at facilitating knowledge sharing, learning and capacity building;
  • Strong analytical and organization skills and ability to engage effectively across multiple issues;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and a decentralized, multi- national network (or programme);
  • Excellent knowledge of, and passionate, about global forestry and conservation issues, policy and trends;
  • Demonstrated experience in building strategic relations and partnerships with various stakeholders, including private sector, funding institutions and NGOs;
  • Self-starter, proactive approach to meeting deadlines and achieving results in a tight schedule
