World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, seeks a Senior Ecosystem Carbon Sepcialist.(Washington, DC).
Senior Ecosystem Carbon Specialist (D.C.)
Work with the Global Science team, the Global Climate Lead Scientist and the Senior Director for Forest Carbon Science to assess the climate impacts of WWF’s portfolio of projects and initiatives. Support global and country Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) teams and partners in estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) carbon emissions, carbon sequestration, and other climate indicators associated with nature-based solutions (NbS) activities. Develop frameworks and related protocols to systematically assess climate impacts across the portfolio of projects related to mangrove conservation and restoration, and area-based conservation across forest, savanna and marine ecosystems. Perform calculations of carbon stocks and fluxes using spatial (e.g. remotely sensed) and field-based data. Collaborate with the carbon science team in the monitoring and evaluation of climate impacts of nature-based solutions in the WWF network. Work with cross-functional teams to formulate a comprehensive set of context indicators for the WWF Data Platform. Utilize ArcGIS Pro, R, and Google Earth Engine to gather, download and process and summarize large and complex datasets related to climate indicators. Provide technical support on Green Climate Fund (GCF) projects initiated by WWF from concept note, full proposal and implementation phase. Conduct research and publish scientific papers on climate and conservation-related topics. Use spatial and field-based data from WWF projects to help answer science questions. Build capacity of WWF staff to apply carbon estimation methods and protocols. Collaborate with WWF network teams and external partners (e.g. academia, other NGOs, government agencies, etc.) to access and produce relevant datasets, and refine and/or develop methodological approaches, protocols, and tools to be used in ecosystem carbon assessments. Critically assesses the science of methodologies and approaches to carbon measurement and accounting at various scales (plot, project, country).
